The slope of a roof, expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6/12 = 6 inches of rise per 12 inches of run).
Pitch determines safety requirements, labor cost, waste factor, and material selection. Roofs with pitches above 8/12 require steep-charge labor; above 12/12 require fall protection equipment that adds significant cost.
