The first course of shingles installed at the eave, with sealant strip and tabs cut to seal the bottom edge of the field shingles.
Manufacturer-spec starter strip is required for warranty validity on most architectural shingles. Carriers commonly omit it or substitute cut field shingles, which voids the warranty and is a legitimate supplement item.
